Contractor: Wood
Project: Mariner A OMMS
Location: UK North Sea
Products: McCrometer V-cone Flow Meters
The Mariner oilfield is located in the United Kingdom sector of the North Sea, about 150 kilometres (93 mi) east of the Shetland Islands, Scotland. It was discovered in 1981 at a depth of about 1,200 metres (3,900 ft) below sea level. Water depth in the area is about 100 metres (330 ft). Estimated recovery is at least 250 million barrels (40×106 m3) of oil.
Owners Equinor (previously known as Statoil) announced recently that “A new chapter is underway for the Mariner field” and, to that end, Wood has secured a £58m contract with the Norway based producer to provide operations, maintenance, modifications and offshore services for the next 3 years, with options to extend.
One of the processes marked for upgrade was the flow measurement of the produced water lines. Requiring a robust solution that would not be abraded by the potential sand content of the process or distorted by the pressure shifts related to the dissolved gas content, after detailed discussions with Able Instruments, Equinor selected the renowned McCrometer V-cone DP meter.
Another key feature of the technology which informed Equinor’s decision was the inherent flow profiling of the meter; V-Cone flow meters utilize a central cone to condition and stabilize flow, creating a predictable velocity profile for accurate measurement. This inherent flow profiling minimizes upstream piping requirements and reduces the impact of flow disturbances, leading to improved accuracy and repeatability.
Four 6” meters in Duplex with 1500# were specified and subsequently procured together with the associated transmitters & manifolds.
