Measureable – Application Insights from Able Instruments
In offshore drilling operations, maintaining control of a well depends on the reliable actuation of blowout preventer systems, yet ensuring hydraulic pressure is directed accurately under high-pressure conditions can be difficult without dependable control performance.
Blowout preventer (BOP) systems play a critical role in well-control operations, particularly where hydraulic actuation must occur quickly and predictably in response to control commands. In these environments, the challenge is not simply generating hydraulic force, but ensuring that pressurised fluid is routed accurately to the correct actuator so that critical equipment responds as intended.
Within hydraulic control systems, pressure integrity is essential. The movement of rams, annular preventers and other BOP components depends on the consistent delivery of hydraulic pressure from accumulator systems through directional control devices. Factors such as leakage, contamination and sealing performance can influence how reliably that pressure is maintained across the control circuit.
Industry standards such as API Standard 53, which covers blowout prevention equipment systems for drilling wells, reinforce the importance of dependable hydraulic performance under all conditions.
From a safety and compliance perspective, BOP systems are expected to function reliably in both routine and emergency conditions. Reliable hydraulic pressure control allows operators to translate control commands into predictable mechanical action within critical well-control systems.
This application story forms part of our ‘Measureable’ series, which explores how measurement technologies help operators understand real-world process conditions, improve operational control, and support safer and more efficient industrial processes.
