Micronics UX5000 ATEX Zone 1 Ultrasonic Clamp-On Flow Meter

Fixed, non-invasive liquid flow measurement for suitable ATEX, IECEx and Class I Div 1 hazardous area applications without cutting into pipework.

Key highlights

  • Approvals: ATEX, IECEx and Class I Div 1 approvals for liquid flow applications
  • Clamp-on: Measures flow without cutting into pipework
  • British made: Manufactured by Micronics in the UK
  • Fixed system: Designed for longer-term installed hazardous area monitoring
  • Liquid duties: For acoustically conductive liquids with less than 3% particulates

The Micronics UX5000 ATEX clamp-on flow meter is a fixed ultrasonic transit-time system for measuring liquid flow in closed pipes within Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. It uses externally mounted sensors to measure flow non-invasively, provided the pipework, liquid and installation conditions are suitable.

For international hazardous area projects, the UX5000 carries ATEX, IECEx and Class I Div 1 approvals. This supports specification across UK, European, North American, Middle Eastern and African projects where the relevant site, project and certification requirements are confirmed during application review.

For hazardous area sites, adding a conventional inline flow meter can involve pipe cutting, flanged connections, hot tapping or other intrusive mechanical work. The UX5000 offers flow measurement without cutting into pipework, helping reduce process intrusion and potential new leak paths where the application is suitable.

The system combines a Display, Control and System Interface Unit with a Remote Measurement Unit and clamp-on ultrasonic sensors. Manufactured by Micronics in the UK, it is designed for harsh, heavy-duty industrial applications where fixed hazardous area flow measurement is required.

The UX5000 is suited to hazardous area process lines, chemical and petrochemical sites, utilities, power-related duties and industrial water applications where the pipe and liquid conditions support transit-time ultrasonic measurement. It provides a pragmatic fixed hazardous area clamp-on flow meter option where ATEX, IECEx or Class I Div 1 certification is required and the duty does not justify a more intrusive or over-specified measurement route.

Application suitability should be reviewed carefully. The UX5000 is not a one-size-fits-all flow meter, and applications involving significant gas bubbles, solids, slurry or unsuitable pipe conditions may require closer review or an alternative flow measurement technology.

Key Features

  • ATEX, IECEx and Class I Div 1: Fixed liquid flow measurement for suitable hazardous area applications with potentially explosive atmospheres.
  • Clamp-on sensors: External transducers measure through the pipe wall without wetted parts or pipe cutting.
  • Transit-time principle: Calculates flow velocity from the difference between upstream and downstream ultrasonic signals.
  • DCSIU and RMU design: Separate display/control and measurement units support flexible field installation.
  • Single or dual channel: Configurable for one channel, two channels on two pipes, or two channels on one pipe.
  • Remote setup: RotoFlow configuration via RS485 Modbus or Bluetooth on PC/tablet, including Aegex 100M tablet setup where required.
  • System outputs: Active 4-20mA outputs, opto-isolated relay outputs and Modbus RTU support plant integration.
  • Measurement performance: Accuracy up to 0.5% with process calibration and repeatability of ±0.15%, subject to suitable installation.
