Barksdale Kelvin ATEX/IECEx Temperature Controller and Limiter

Provides electronic temperature control and limiting for electric trace-heating and industrial process applications in hazardous areas.

Key highlights

  • Flexible control: Controller, limiter or combined controller/limiter options
  • Hazardous area: ATEX/IECEx Ex component-certified BHTC/BHTL for Zone 1/2; BHTLC for Zone 2
  • Wide temperature range: Controls from 0 to 500°C with measurement from -60 to 500°C
  • Heat-trace switching: Up to 30 A for BHTC/BHTL, with BHTLC limited to 22 A
  • Interface options: Dial setpoint, LED, Modbus and Bluetooth options

The Barksdale Kelvin is designed for hazardous area electric trace heating, providing electronic temperature measurement, monitoring, control and limiting within industrial temperature-control systems. BHTC, BHTL and BHTLC configurations provide controller, limiter or combined controller/limiter functions according to the required application.

Typical applications include freeze protection, process temperature control, over-temperature control and viscosity control, where pipework, tanks and other heated equipment must remain within the required temperature range.

Kelvin is relevant both to plant engineers specifying temperature control and to OEM and system integration requirements, where heat-trace manufacturers and system integrators incorporate electronic temperature control into wider equipment or heat-trace assemblies.

Kelvin is supplied as an ATEX/IECEx Ex component rather than a stand-alone finished enclosure. BHTC and BHTL configurations are certified for EPL Gb/Db applications, while BHTLC is certified for EPL Gc/Dc applications. The selected configuration must therefore be incorporated into suitable equipment or an enclosure and matched to the hazardous area, control function and installation requirements of the final application.

Key Features

  • Hazardous area certification: BHTC and BHTL are ATEX/IECEx Ex component-certified for EPL Gb/Db applications, while BHTLC is Ex component-certified for EPL Gc/Dc applications.
  • Trace-heating compliance: Controller, limiter and combined controller/limiter configurations meet the applicable IEC/IEEE 60079-30-1 requirements within their certified EPL scope.
  • Two-point control and fault response: Heater operation is controlled according to measured temperature, setpoint and hysteresis, with the heater de-energised if a sensor or device malfunction is detected.
  • Temperature limiter operation: Limiter configurations de-energise the heater when the limiting temperature is reached and require a manual reset before heating is restored.
  • Remote Modbus access: Modbus RTU configurations support remote parameter setting and monitoring of operating and device-status information.
  • Local Bluetooth access: Bluetooth-equipped configurations support local programming and monitoring without opening the final enclosure, subject to use of a suitable programming device for the hazardous area.
  • Diagnostic monitoring: Available status functions identify temperature warnings, sensor faults, relay-life warnings and device over-temperature conditions through the fitted interfaces.
  • Installation flexibility: DIN rail clip or panel mounting supports integration into the suitably protected enclosure required for the final installation.
