The scent of compliance: Investigating odour and hydrogen sulphide in wastewater treatment

Measureable – Application Insights from Able Instruments

Odour complaints from nearby communities are a familiar challenge for many wastewater treatment works, yet determining whether hydrogen sulphide emissions are responsible can be difficult without reliable measurement data.

Odour complaints at wastewater treatment works are often reported by nearby communities, but identifying their origin requires objective evidence. Operators must understand whether conditions within the treatment process are contributing to the issue and whether odour mitigation systems are functioning as intended.

Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) is one of the gases most commonly associated with wastewater odour events. It typically forms under septic conditions and may be released during sludge handling, pumping and other treatment processes. Monitoring hydrogen sulphide concentrations therefore provides valuable insight when investigating odour complaints and assessing treatment performance.

Under regulatory frameworks such as the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED), operators may need to demonstrate that emissions from treatment facilities are being effectively managed. Reliable hydrogen sulphide monitoring allows operators to convert subjective odour observations into measurable data, supporting both operational decision-making and regulatory accountability.

Portable gas analysis instruments are frequently used during odour investigations to determine where hydrogen sulphide is present, how concentrations vary across a site, and whether mitigation systems are performing as expected. These measurements can also provide early indication of process conditions that may lead to increased odour generation.

This application story forms part of our ‘Measureable’ series, which explores how measurement technologies help operators understand real-world process conditions, improve operational control, and support safer and more efficient industrial processes.
