Hach FLO-DAR Area Velocity Sensor
McCrometer Hach Flow Solutions FLO-DAR Area Velocity Sensor for Non-Contact Monitoring
Able Instruments are McCrometer’s Exclusive UK & Ireland Representative for the Hach FLO-DAR Area Velocity Sensor, part of the Hach Flow Solutions portfolio by McCrometer. FLO-DAR is a non-contact area velocity sensor designed for monitoring open channel flow conditions without requiring sensor submergence.
The FLO-DAR Area Velocity Sensor measures flow velocity using Digital Doppler Radar technology and depth using ultrasonic pulse echo sensing. By measuring velocity from above the flow, the sensor avoids many of the limitations associated with submerged measurement technologies, including fouling, debris accumulation, and disturbance caused by high solids content.
Key Features:
- Non-contact area velocity sensing: Measures flow velocity from above the channel using Digital Doppler Radar technology.
- Integrated velocity and depth measurement: Combines radar-based velocity measurement with ultrasonic pulse echo depth sensing.
- Reduced fouling and maintenance risk: Above-flow installation avoids contact with debris, grease, and high solids content.
- Improved installation safety: Minimises the need for confined space entry during installation, inspection, or replacement.
- Suitable for portable or permanent monitoring: Compatible with FL900 Series Flow Loggers and FL1500 Series Flow Monitors.
- Surcharge monitoring capability: Optional Surcharge Velocity Sensor supports continued velocity measurement during surcharge conditions.
- Proven measurement stability: Accuracy and long-term stability independently verified through laboratory and field evaluations.

Above-flow installation allows the sensor to remain clear of the process, supporting consistent data collection in locations where access conditions, safety requirements, or process characteristics make submerged sensors impractical. Installation and maintenance activities can typically be carried out with minimal contact with the flow, helping to reduce the need for confined space entry.
The FLO-DAR sensor is suitable for both portable and permanent monitoring installations. It can be used with the Hach FL900 Series Flow Loggers for temporary or campaign-based monitoring and connected to the FL1500 Series Flow Monitor for permanently powered sites.
An optional Surcharge Velocity Sensor (SVS) is available to support velocity measurement during surcharge conditions. Typical applications referenced for the FLO-DAR platform include wastewater, collection systems, and industrial water monitoring where non-contact area velocity measurement is preferred.
